Want to perform better at work? A small change can make all the difference.
We have had access to a study published in Harvard Business Review by Christopher M. Barnes that presents compelling evidence on the benefits of wearing blue light filter glasses to improve sleep and work performance.
As we have pointed out on numerous occasions at Apricotte, the study analyzed how blocking blue light before bedtime influences sleep quality and work performance. Exposure to this light, which is common in electronic devices, inhibits melatonin production, making it difficult to fall asleep. Wearing blue light filter glasses allows melatonin to increase naturally, facilitating a more restful sleep.
The study was conducted with two groups of employees in Brazil: 63 managers and 67 customer service representatives. Participants alternated between wearing blue light filter glasses and placebo glasses (with the same frames but no actual filter) for just two weeks, and the results were remarkable:
- Increase in sleep time: 5% more for managers and 6% more for customer service representatives.
- Better sleep quality: 14% more among managers and 11% more among representatives.
- Greater commitment to work: 8.5% more among managers and 8.25% more among representatives.
- Increase in helping behavior: 17% more in both groups.
- Reduction in negative behaviors: 11% less in both groups.
- Improvement in work performance: Among managers, 7.1% according to self-assessment. In customer service, 9% increase in customer ratings.
These findings suggest that a small change, such as wearing orange and red glasses with blue light filters, can offer a significant return on investment in productivity and well-being.
At Apricotte, we believe in the importance of blue light protection and its health benefits. If you're looking to improve your sleep and daily performance, exploring blue light blocking solutions could be a great first step.
