The risks of watching too much TV

In most homes, television is the preferred form of entertainment. In just a few decades, this device, which emits large amounts of blue light has become an indispensable part of our daily lives. Whether it's for the news, watching a movie, or a game, the small screen is present in our homes.

During this time, various studies have examined the multiple impacts that television has had on our lives. For example, several studies link the amount of time we spend in front of the television to obesity problems or even abnormal glucose levels in the body. This is partly related to the fact that increased screen use can lead to a largely sedentary lifestyle and an unhealthy diet.

The number of screens emitting blue light and invite us to sit on the sofa has multiplied in recent years. Does this impact our health? According to a study conducted by Chris Wharton of Arizona State University's College of Health Solutions in Phoenix, the answer is yes.

In the study conducted by Wharton, in which 926 people in the United States were interviewed, those whose use of any type of digital screen averaged 17.5 hours per day had a poor diet and various health problems. Those in this group tended to eat less vegetables and fruit and to overindulge in fast food. They also had much poorer sleep quality. much poorer quality of sleep, exercised much less, and experienced high levels of stress.

Wharton also emphasizes the impact that COVID-19 may have on these statistics: "I think COVID has made us see clearly how our lives are measured through screens. They were before, and even more so now. I think it's a good time to start thinking about our health and how screens should not be the only form of interaction, but rather a small part of our daily lives."

At Apricotte, we agree with Dr. Wharton. Technology should serve us and never harm us. Blue light glasses are our protection against the most harmful light waves and are essential for taking care of our eyes and sleep cycles, but we must not forget that a healthy diet and moderate exercise are fundamental parts of our daily lives.
