Blue light and children, the silent enemy.
In the current situation, children and young people have been exposed to screens much more than they are used to, as most classes have moved online. Added to this is the fact that outdoor and extracurricular activities have been dramatically reduced this year, leading children to use screens much more, both computers when studying and televisions, tablets, etc. in their free time, which means they are almost always exposed to them.
As you may already know, blue light is linked to a number of physical effects on us, and even more so on children, whose eyes are more vulnerable to overexposure to screens. However, it should be noted that these physical effects can also have consequences beyond the eyes.
Hormonal effects
According to Block Blue Light, blue light can have a major impact on children's hormonal balance: "Blue light stimulates our brain, slowing down or even stopping the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone, leading to a distortion of people's biological cycle" and affecting the development of children's hormonal patterns. Exposure to blue light can lead to an increase in the production of adrenaline, dopamine, serotonin, and cortisol.
Anxiety
As we have seen, it has been proven that blue light disrupts sleep patterns. A good night's sleep is essential for the proper functioning of anyone's mind, but especially that of children.
A cycle of poor sleep leads to increased stress levels, which can cause anxiety problems in young children, including an increase in comfort-seeking and aggressive behavior.
ADHD
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) seems to be an increasingly common problem in our society. One in ten children is diagnosed with this condition. Many scientists and child psychologists have already linked it to overexposure to digital screens, where blue light plays a key role. Children often stay up late using their phones and screens, which leads to a worsening of this condition. When combined with sleep deprivation or hormonal imbalance, the consequences are very negative.
