Zoom Fatigue

Zoom Fatigue

Working from home has many benefits. You avoid traffic, public transportation at 7 a.m., and, let's face it, working in your pajamas is sometimes a big plus. However, psychologists and doctors have come together to discuss "Zoom Fatigue."

The shift to remote working has led to an increase in the use of video call and online meeting platforms such as Teams, Zoom, and Skype.

Why do we experience Zoom Fatigue?

When attending virtual meetings, we often have to work harder to read nonverbal cues such as body language, facial expressions, and emotions. This is more difficult to do virtually, as audio delays can create silences, we may accidentally talk over others, and we may overanalyze tone of voice.  In addition, during these meetings, we may feel the need to maintain constant eye contact with the camera to ensure that we are being seen and listened to. In face-to-face meetings, we are likely to look around the room, gaze out the window, etc. Likewise, we may be tempted to check email and work in the background, which not only divides our attention but can also be exhausting.

This causes incredible levels of stress that we are not used to, and since at Apricotte we always want you to be W.E.L., we are going to give you some tips on how to avoid Zoom Fatigue.

1- Take a break between meetings. That way you can stretch your legs, clear your head a little, pet your cat, or enjoy a coffee.

2- Set limits. If possible, set a maximum number of meetings to attend in a day so you don't overload your schedule or your mind.

3- You can replace a video call with a simple phone call (or perhaps an email).

4- Avoid multitasking. We know it's tempting to check your emails or finish that last Excel spreadsheet during those endless calls, but sometimes that can increase your lack of concentration and therefore your fatigue.

Know your limits, and if you want to combine this with the best protection for your eyes with blue light glasses for computer use, you know where to find us.
